What is the future of console gaming?

  I remember my first ever games console, the Amiga 600. I use the term “console” loosely, but it came with games, so who cares! It was a thing of beauty, with its massive 1mb RAM, grey/white plastic veneer and built in keyboard. I was six years old and that Christmas I was in heaven. Although the Amiga was somewhat average in comparison to some of the earlier “classic” consoles, I felt like i had a ultra modern gaming machine!

 

Today the world of gaming consoles have come far since the Amiga, and the console industry is continuing to gain market share amongst other entertainment forms at an alarming rate. According to the annual ESA (Entertainment Software Association) report in 2007, the video game industry was valued at an estimated $9.5 bn. This gives a clear idea of the importance gaming companies put on producing a top-selling console. In such a competitive market, Where do the next innovations in gaming consoles lie?

 

The main competitors in the console market are currently the Sony Playstation 3, Microsoft’s XBox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. The Nintendo console became especially popular due to its unique control mechanism and interactivity required to play. Nintendo’s latest console hints at a new direction for console gaming by engaging the user within the game in a more direct, fun way. In creating a controller with motion sensors embedded, rather than the traditional gaming joystick or D-pad, the Wii has broken the mould for gaming in the last few years due to originality.

 

As console developers computing power, budgets and expertise increase throughout the gaming industry, such innovations will only become more prevalent and important within the industry to gain market share. In the next few years, expect more expansion on the popular multi-player gaming platforms (think Halo 3..), advanced user interactivity within the games and progressive developments such as mind powered gaming! I cant wait!
